मुघल साम्राज्याला हादरा देणारे शिवशाहीतील एक महत्वाचे प्रकरण म्हणजे शिवाजी महाराजांनी केलेली सुरतेची पहिली लुट.
शाईस्तेखानाने स्वराज्यात राहून केलेली स्वराज्याची नासधूस,
या सर्व काळामधे महाराजांचे पन्हाळगडावरून पलायन, चाकणचा वेढा, उंबरखिंडीचे युद्ध, या सर्व घटनांवर मात करीत महाराजांनी रामनवमीच्या दिवशी केलेला शाईस्तेखानाचा पराभव , या सर्व घटनांमुळे स्वराज्याचा खजिना रिकामा होत होता आणि याची भरपाई म्हणून महाराजांनी एक धाडसी
मोहीम आखली , ही मोहीम स्वराज्यात राहून नव्हे तर स्वराज्याचा बाहेर जाऊन राबवायची होती.
मुघली गोटात शिरून चोख तयारीनिशी महाराजांनी मनसुबा आखला आणि या नव्या शिलांगणाची मोहीम महाराजांनी आपल्या सगळ्यात विश्वासू हेरावर सोपवली आणि ते म्हणजे
हेर खात्याचे प्रमुख बहिर्जी नाईक.
गुजरात प्रांतातील सुरत शहर म्हणजे अतिशय समृद्ध
आणि श्रीमंत.
दिल्लीच्या खालोखाल सुरतेचा मान होता.
कोट्यावधी रुपयांची उलाढाल या सुरत शहरामधून चाले.
बहिर्जीकडून ही सगळी माहिती ऐकल्यावर
"लष्कर चाकरी नाफारी काम मनाजोगे होणार नाही
याजकरिता जावे तरी आपण खासा लष्कर घेऊन जावे ”
या विचारे महाराजांनी स्वत: जाण्याचे निश्चित केले व सर्व सैन्याच्या जमावानिशी महाराजांनी मार्गशीष वद्य द्वितीया शके १५८५ म्हणजेच ६ डिसें १६६३ रोजी सुरतेसाठी राजगडाहून प्रस्थान केले.

The city of Surat in the state of Gujarat is very prosperous

Surat was next to Delhi.
